Art At Atelier | Fall ‘25

Born in Japan in 1983, Yuko Gunji studied the art of kintsugi under Gen Saratani, a renowned maki-e artist based in New York, and continued her training with Japanese lacquer artist Hakubun Chin. Through urushi lacquer, she explores the delicate dialogue between restoration and creation—reviving broken forms while revealing new layers of beauty and meaning.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, including her 2023 solo exhibition NEW-VINTAGE in New York. In 2024, she was invited by the Smithsonian Institution as an Artisan-in-Residence, where she led public talks and hands-on workshops. That same year, her work was featured in Golden Veins: The Art of Kintsugi and Transformation at Alison Bradley Projects (New York), curated by Deborah Goodman Davis, alongside works by renowned artists such as Yoko Ono and Theaster Gates.

In addition to her artistic and educational practice, Gunji continues to undertake kintsugi restoration projects for private collectors and institutions worldwide.
